The BBC had been caught out. It had poured significant resources into a story that a subsequent EC official statement, and newspaper correction, had all but destroyed. Despite the new development emerging, the corporation paid scant regard and ploughed on with its anti-independence narrative.

Claims that an independent Scotland would be forced out of the EU were in fact all but impossible to support. As this book has explained and was widely known at the time, there existed no mechanism for removing a country or territory that was already a member. Indeed one example where an existing member, Greenland, requested an end to its own membership took fully two years.

A letter was eventually sent to the House of Lords Committee, but as with previous statements from the EC it was open to interpretation.

You would be forgiven for thinking that the BBC would now be a little more circumspect when reporting claims and opinions relating to the issue of the European Union. But less than a week later it was at it again.
